Hello from across the pond! I read several cycling forums, but out of all of them, this one seems the most friendly and I really enjoy reading the posts here.
As an old coot (52), I wish I could say I'd ridden for years, but I haven't. This last spring I picked up a beach cruiser type of bike, which was fun and fine for the flat paths, but I slowly started thinking about bike commuting to work, and that cruiser wouldn't work for that. So I picked up a road bike, screwed up the courage and started short distance, then longer rides. It was tough...lol! My commute is 8miles/12 K one way...for someone who hadn't ridden in 30 years the first few times just about killed me...lol. but since then I have dropped 20 lbs. and enjoying it much more.
I also decided I wanted a second bike for winter riding. We have a Raleigh bike store here, and there in the corner, almost unnoticed, sat a 2009 Raleigh One Way SS. Brand new, it had sat in the shop all this time, unloved and unpurchased, couldn't compete here against the newer looking bikes with disc brakes or 21 speeds and it wasn't blackor gun-metal grey(the latest colors) I fell in love, classic lines, dark blue frame, brooks saddle, nice fenders...so they made me a good deal and I bought it. And you know, I enjoy riding this much more than my road bike...makes the commute a little tougher but oh well.
Here, I don't deal with the insane amount of cars and buses that you folks may have...but bike commuting and bike culture is not common here and drivers can be pretty rude at times Most folks only look at biking as something to be done on the weekend and on the bike paths....and what the hell is that bike doing on the shoulder of the road anyway!?
Anyway, I very much enjoy this forum. Hope to make a few good friends here too!

Hi LordMarv, and :welcome: From this side of the pond!

Only been cycling for about 10 weeks now. Fell in love with a Giant Defy 1 but knew nothing about bikes at all. Learnt all I know from here and the web. Got into it to lose weight but having so much fun and meeting new people so going to do a few sportives next year.
My sister and brother in law live in San Francisco (don't envy the hills) and have just started biking themselves to keep fit. Going to look at commuting next spring which will be 22 miles each way. The longest distance I have done so far is 50 miles which nearly killed me. Going go join my local club when I pick up speed.

Cheers,

Andy.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Hello. Welcome from Powys. I hadn't ridden a bike for 45 years so I know how you felt those first few times. Well done. Hope you enjoy the forum.

Welcome LordMarv!
You need a few more posts to be able to upload a picture, it's an antispam measure.
Great first post, you can never have enough bikes

How much does it cost to Oldham?
I might be movin' to Montana soon
Just to raise me up a crop of Dental Floss Raisin' it up
Waxen it down
In a little white box
I can sell uptown
By myself I wouldn't
Have no boss,
But I'd be raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Well I just might grow me some bees
But I'd leave the sweet stuff
For somebody else...
but then, on the other hand
I'd Keep the wax N' melt it down
Pluck some Floss N' swish it aroun'
I'd have me a crop
An' it'd be on top

(that's why I'M movin' to Montana)

Movin' to Montana soon
Gonna be a Dental Floss tycoon
(yes I am)
Movin' to Montana soon
Gonna be a mennil-toss flykune
I'm pluckin' the ol' Dennil Floss
That's growin' on the prairie
Pluckin' the floss!
I plucked all day an' all nite an' all Afternoon...
I'm ridin' a small tiny hoss
(His name is MIGHTY LITTLE)
He's a good hoss
Even though He's a bit dinky to strap a big saddle or
Blanket on anyway
He's a bit dinky to strap a big saddle or
Blanket on anyway
Any way I'm pluckin' the ol' Dennil Floss
Even if you think it is a little silly, folks
I don't care if you think it's silly, folks
I don't care if you think it's silly, folks
I'm gonna find me a horse
Just about this big
An' ride him all along the border line
With a Pair of heavy-duty
Zircon-encrusted tweezers in my hand
Every other wrangler would say
I was mighty grand
By myself I wouldn't
Have no boss
But I'd be raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Well I might Ride along the border
With my tweezers gleamin'
In the moon-lighty night
And then I'd Get a cuppa cawfee
N' give my foot a push...
Just me 'n the pymgy pony
Over the Dennil Floss Bush
N' then I might just Jumb back on
An' ride Like a cowboy
Into the dawn to Montana
Movin' to Montana soon

(Yippy-Ty-O-Ty-Ay)

Movin' to Montana soon
