My month's trip with my Brompton has now come to an end, and I arrived home on Eurostar from Brussels last night. I didn't enjoy the whole Eurostar security/check-in process where I had to lug the bike inside a bag around a long a snaking queue, but everything else has been fantastic.
In the last few days I did some rides of around 30km with luggage, but have generally kept laden rides to flattish routes after earlier experiences. Two of these were in Czechia between small towns, and the final one along the Rhine from Bonn to Köln after a rather arduous night sitting upright on a train, when getting out into the fresh air and morning sunshine was just what I needed, and a memorable end marker for the trip.
I also found that the further north-west I came, the more Bromptons I saw. Vienna had a couple, then 2 or 3 on the morning commute around Köln, and Brussels was awash with them.
Am I pleased I got the Brompton? I'm delighted.
Would I use it again on a train or plane-based trip? Most definitely.
Would I use it for full bike touring? For that I would want lower gears, but would certainly consider it.
one Czechia-based ride took me into Poland
Mingling with the cycle commuters in Vienna
Looking drawn after an overnight train journey in a seated compartment
Morning ride along the Rhine
