Joff, of this parish, dun up like a kipper in Ecuador.
Seems like he is OK, at least he still has the bike and the pith helmet
Got of fairly lightly at the end, it's a dodgy area, I've camped my way through South America and it was not without incident.
At least the next lecture he gives he will have an extra story (but I guess he will have lost most of his photos)

I visit South America fairly regularly and camping by the road is always going to be risky. I asked my wife why no one had camper vans once, her response was immediate, "because you would be robbed". As a "gringo" you do tend to stick out a bit, but riding a penny farthing wearing a Pith helmet is going to make you stand out like a sore thumb. People in many areas are desperate and when you suffer crime it can be very serious.
Glad it was only material possessions lost and not anything worse.
