Whats everyone's opinions on the best way to train for really long climbs like those in the Alps.

Going up and down short hills?

Cycle hard, in a gear more difficult than you're used to?

Go on a stationary gym bike, whack the resistance up and pedal for a couple hours?

Of those three options, the least useless is option 3.

Long alpine climbs require you to make a consistently hard effort for the duration of the climb, so focusing on the type of training which replicates those long, hard, steady efforts will be the most appropriate. A turbo would be more useful than a gym bike though...preferably fitted with the bike you are going to be riding.
 
Good endurance base, throw in some climbs, short sharp, long slow, ride in and out of the saddle, mix it up.
Suffer well and enjoy.
Oh and remember to take in the views and not just the tarmac 2 meters in front of the bike :-))
Depending on your fitness level if the alpine climb is 20+ kms long then I work on a 2 hours climbing or there about.
Never done a time trial, but the word "simply " is not one that springs to mind when describing any of the riding I have done in the Alps.

The thing that will stop you is the build up of lactate acid in your legs. Training to increase your tolerance of the pain is one way but you can also increase what is known as your lactate threshold and working on this systematically is the way to go.
