No, I but I might be spectating! I will not be trying to drive down the High Street either. Look out for Young Un, he will be doing the 40 mile challenge.

being a traditionalist I have 16 inchers on it, more aerodynamic as well ;)

Not sure where you'd put the tinsel, but how about using a fairing?

It was at the 2008 BHPC Hillingdon race meet, so the results should be out there somewhere. Piloted by Andy Forey, I believe.

and don't want to risk getting stuck 20 miles from home with a busted Moulton:sad:...

(Ned Seagoon voice) Good grief! 20 miles from home with a busted Moulton? He'll be thrown out of the ATS for that!

Sorry, Goon Show moment. ;)

Don't think a Moulton would be my cup of tea, I'm leaning more in the 'bent direction meself. Stoopid question, but do the smaller wheels reduce running costs at all?

Yes. You save a third on rimtape when you build your own, due to the smaller circumference:smile:

Nah. Not really. Although there is less material in shorter spokes, smaller tyres, 20" rims, etc, the cost tends to be about the same. The choices can be restrictive, and the 'specialist' nature of some of the variants mean that you can end up paying *more*.

On the other hand, smaller wheels are stronger, and often weigh less than their full scale counterparts. This can give increased resilience, or performance gains.

The fact that there's only 2/3rds of the material in my 20" front, mean I can get away with running heavier duty tyres than I would choose for a full size wheel.

This is a good thing, as a smaller wheel will wear faster due to increased revolutions. My poor little marathon front has done about 6k miles in the last 12 months, which for a 20" wheel is possibly 18 million revs. The back wheel has done the same mileage, but as a 26" has only done 13,500,000.

After that kind of mileage, its worth checking bearings and braking surfaces too. ;)
