You will just have to love him as for what he is, rather than what you wanted him to be. We understand you feel that your world has fallen apart, but this is the 21st century. You might go through something like a grieving phase, shock, anger, denial, guilt. Do not condemn yourself for the emotions you feel, but try to move towards acceptance, understanding and support. What you have really lost is the image of your son as a strong, free non-helmet wearer. That image will be replaced with an image of him happy in his new, helmeted state.
Remember , helmeteers who are shut out by their parents often turn towards bungee jumping, cliff diving and all sorts of dangerous nonsense. You are halfway to preventing this as you already know of his helmet inclinations. Does he need to wear a helmet at work? I do hope not.
