Even more wanky than personalised plates is writing your initials in copperplate text on the car door. Haven't seem many of those recently but they and the plates are symptoms of people who take their cars too seriously.
I used to have a materialistic colleague who left a very good job because our boss wouldn't let him have a BMW. He once said to me "I won't be satisfied with anything les than a beemer on my drive". He used to judge people entirely by their car - he also once said to me "they were really nice people, all driving beemers, mercs, audis and so on...."
