Well its a gurt big subsoiler, mostly used to break up compaction, caused by
Gurt big tractors with boom sprayers such as this...

It's a vicious circle of biggering and biggering.

But as our current chair of efra remarked to me.

"You won't easily get the boys off of their toys*"

Bigger tractors, bigger expense, tighter margins, higher fuel and machinery costs, chasing the cost of borrowing for or leasing all this kit.

The commodity buyers know the cost of production, and production rates, they can speculate on futures, its a buyers market

But It's not about growing food for human nutrition any more.

It's extractive business, which is trashing our soils, and not feeding us well.

But don't blame the farmer - they're doing what the 'experts' and the bank tell them they must - peer pressure, and 'business as usual' is as rife in agriculture as anywhere else.

Going against all that and saying

"But what about our soils?
What about ecology?
What about human nutrition?"

Gets you laughed at in conventional farming circles.

But somehow it's making some of us a living all the same :okay:

* I used to charge about on contraptions, such as this.. And yes it's kinda fun for a while.
But after a while it gets a tad soul (and soil) destroying..

Stock photo, but has anyone else used one of these?
I cut about half an acre of grass in an inaccessible paddock about 44 years ago.

I still ache 🤪
I used one on my grandfathers croft when I went there for summer holidays over 60 years ago now.

Yes I have. I use it all the time. I have a small anvil to peen the blade and get it really sharp. I find it a pleasure to use.

I guess if you use one a lot, the relevant muscles get fitter!

Saw a DB 995 out earning it's keep today with a nice load of spuds.

I regularly see old MFs, Fords and Zetors still working but it's rare to see a David Brown, International, Nuffield/Leyland/Marshall or Lamborghini still working. I wonder why:wacko:

A couple of the tractors used at the Banger Racing track at Brafield to tow the knackered cars away after the races.
