Funnily enough, I never used a ruck for many of my earlier cycle-camping trips, and simply crammed my sleeping bag, tent and bits and pieces into a single saddlebag (below).
But in more recent years I dispensed with the saddlebag and carried everything in a ruck on my back as an experiment and it felt very comfortable, so I've stuck with a ruck ever since..
