i wasn't entirely joking either !

No - I didn't think you were.

Well, on the 'best cheese to accompany French onion soup that isn't gruyere because I can't be bothered to go out of my way to go to a supermarket front' I have tried cheap cheddar from the corner shop. It was perfectly acceptable. Next up is Babybel. I shunned Edam and Leerdammer because they were dearer, although I suspect they are closer to gruyere. The search continues.

maybe one for the middle classes: household hint 144-

Don't waste money on expensive foreign Parmesan; buy Cheddar instead, but unwrap it and keep it for a month or two and it turns into perfeclty satisfactory Parmesan
Hang about.....doesn't it start growing a grey/blue mould as well?

Parmesan is best eaten toasted.

I crack open a bottle of bubbly, toast the parmesan, and then........

.........................I can't remember much after that, but I can remember it being a good evening.
You can get special middle class cheddar made with raw milk.
I think the point was to not be middle class poncy ! that would defeat the object.
