What is a coaster brake?

I don't like them either - they are really easy to activate accidentally when you are coasting, it's almost impossible to stand on the pedals to get your backside off the saddle when you need to stand up (for me at least). Also, when you skid with one it's a really unstable position.

But I guess you could easily get used to them with enough practice.

Had one on my Team Murray BMX as a kid, on mag wheels that weighed a ton.
i had the same bike!

I had a old Union sit up and beg with a coaster rear brake.
I ended up taking the front brake off as it was just a cabled brake.
Everyone used to think it was brakeless.

I wouldn't want it on a performance bike but I have two bikes with one and like them. They work well enough for most purposes and will work reliably in hail, rain or snow and need very little maintainance. Using one becomes second nature very quickly and you subconciously position the pedals correctly.

The biggest problem is getting uses to it and then the “oh shoot!” moment on a calliper braked bike when you arrive at a busy junction and back pedal...
