Insurers. They're down there with estate agents, solicitors and Benito Mussolini in my book.

They actually did you a favour, £88 saved on last years premium.

I'd write a letter warmly thanking them.

They know that a certain percentage of people will look at the increase, have a grumble about it, and then renew without shopping around.

As long as they set their prices to retain that percentage then they're quids in.

Although Dave does have his Faberge egg collection, and signed photo of Margaret Thatcher - pricy items to replace.
Sadly the photo of Maggie has a moustache and beard drawn on so may not be as valuable now.

That looks like they are changing the market segment they want to target, and you are no longer their demographic.

We pay a lot more than that and have had exceptional service and value for money over a long number of years.
I got more than my premium back this year to redecorate a whole room where one wall was damaged following a roof leak.
Claim by phone. Submit quote by email the next day. Cash in the bank the same day weeks before work done.

With insurance, as with anything else, you get what you pay for.

Insurance is quite cheap in the UK compared to other countries. The insurers rely on inertia to make their money. If everyone did what the OP did, they (insurers) would go bust. There are sufficient people who don't shop around, and so, pay a higher premium to make this business model sustainable. This system penalises the elderly, those without internet and those that are ignorant/lazy.

Absolutely.
If the renewal price had been eg +10% I would have just gone with it.

Remember Warren Buffet started on Insurance and never let go. He avoided Banks. If ever there is sector that flies under the radar and lacks transparency its this lot. There is no benchmarks unlike loans. Shopping around for the cheapest doesn't help as it is not tied to any claim record.
