19.3mph on the long way home.

As the sun was out and staying up for a bit longer tonight I took a longer way home

Only a few miles longer than normal but It's good to do a bit extra as I find my legs getting a bit too used to the normal 9-10 mile routes. Anyway, not only did I go a longer way home, I also got my average up from 18mph to19mph. Good times! Got home feeling good and in good time.

Amazing what a bit of sun can do.

Anybody else noticing a difference?

I normally have my longer ride in the morning as there is far less traffic and tends to be a more pleasant ride, although I will be extending both this spring/summer especially once I receive my new bike. My longer rides always seem to be faster than my short rides as it has long stretches of fast fairly flat road with very few junctions and RAB's.

I struggle to keep my moving average above 15mph, there are an outlandish amount of lights and gridlock though

I sneak up to 18 every now and then with traffic lights and traffic, but 19 is a monster effort - well done!

In 10 years of commuting over my 14.5 miles (only 4 sets of lights) I have only managed an average of 19 mph four times and the last time was 19.9 mph. So close to the magical 20 but yet so far, I will have another crack this year subject to favourable wind / road conditions / traffic light sequence.

Yes, the ride home is so much better with a bit more light. I love it. Good average mph on a hybrid.

19.9! So close, thats what I'm aiming for. Only been doing the work commute for a year last month and the average back then was 14-15mph.

you are right light and warmth make a differance , we saw an average of 12.5 mph on the tandem over weekend so cant complain , need to try to get nearer to the 14 figure , as next target

I once managed a 22mph rolling average on my commute into the West End. I hate to think what the door to door average was with 120 traffic lights.

For some reason my brain just didn't register -2.5C this morning... cue a painful & 'slow' 16.9mph ride to work... but as you said for the return commute the sun was out & it was perfect temps for my clothes so with basically fresh legs my home bound was something a little bit special.
