Folks
Got 1k to spend on a new bike. Has to be cyclescheme. Can put money to it if allowed.

Got a giant defy 3yrs ago on the scheme... Now looking for an upgrade. Recently joined a club. Giant will be used as winter bike/commute.

Do i go for a full carbon ribble or a better spec alu?

Cheers

Always buy the best frame you can for your budget, so at £1K that will be alu and should definitely have the letters CAAD on it IMO.

What carbon bikes are you looking at? The alu will have better components - Tiagra or 105. What do you expect the carbon frame to give you that the alu won't? Which retailers can you use? With cyclescheme you are meant to commute on the bike, can you find a carbon frame that will take mudguards, rack etc?

If you like sram, Westbrook cycles still have cannondale supersix in for 1150.

Epic frame.

Can't we get a sticky about frames and the differences, and some general buying guide?

This is getting tiresome.

Well, I enjoy helping people to make decisions on bikes and accessories, however a lot of this subforum is now cluttered with threads like this, hence the need for me to comment.

I could say there's no need to start a thread if you'd bother to read other threads beforehand, but that might be a bit blunt and unhelpful.

Couldn't agree more. My defy one is regarded as a brilliant alu frame. Has 105 and comes in at £1k. My friend bought a budget carbon (cube agree gtc), also a nice bike at £1250,but it only has Tiagra.
We weighed them side by side and there was 0.4kg difference.

I have the 2010 Cube Agree GTC Pro and love it. Had it for 2 years now. I've upgraded new shiny bits as you do but it's a great bike. You get a lot of bang for your buck with Cube.

Ok I need to make a decision!,,

What advantage will a carbon give me over an Alu?

Once I decide carbon or Alu I can concentrate on spec
