Hi all. I've got my 1st 10mile TT tomorrow night on Q10/5 course. Just wondering if anyone can offer some advice. I was wondering what gear to pull away in, whether to keep an average speed on the computer or just go flat out? Also what is a respectable novice time target? Cheers

Don't go out too hard or you'll blow in the 1st 5miles, you can always push a little harder towards the end & anything under 30mins Avg 20mph is good for a beginner. Not that I've ever done an organised 10 myself but I do time myself on a 10mile course every now & then.

Oh! & Good luck

Ah, I'll be interested in your responses as well, as I have my first TT (10 Miles) coming up in just over a week.

Good Luck!

DO NOT go off at maximum power, work yourself into the ride and keep up as fast a cadence as you are comfortable with. For 10 mile TT's warm up for at least 30 mins and better still 40 mins with 2 or 3 hard efforts within the warm up. An old adage says, finishing strong will give you a better time than starting strong [unless you are Michael Hutchinson]. Good luck.

Yes, definitely warm up before you start.

Good luck and let us know your time ...

And don't forget, it's your first one. There'll be plenty of opportunities to improve on your time once you've got this first one under your belt.

Cheers,
Shaun

Oh, and if you can do a sub-one-hour 10 you're doing better than me ... lol

Don't start too fast.

And don't start too slow either.

It's tricky. Damn, just ride it and see what time you do. Then work out what you could've done better and have another go.

They are very addictive so my first bit of advice will be hide your wallet otherwise you will be spending fortunes on Aero bits

Alas my work precludes me from attending the mid week ones unless I book a half day ! but the feeling at the end of your first one is indescribable. I can honestly say it was one of the best things I'd done on a bike.

Here are some slightly better tips:

Most TT's are straight out and back and should have too many corners but a recce of teh course in advance can certainly help.

Warm up! you must go off with warm muscles if it is fairly local ride there (the ride back may hurt a bit though) I rode about 8 miles to my local event which meant I was just getting into my stride at the time of the off.

Try not to go off 1st - Provided you are looking to complete close to 30 mins try and go off somewhere between 5th and 10th. (Have a look at last years results. You should have a vague idea about your expected time and place yourself accordingly) it helps immensly to have someone to chase down and overtake (pride) as well as not being overtaken too often by the fast guys (pride taking a hit), if you go off too near the back.

Do not worry that there are people there on Aero Bikes that sound funny as they whizz by leaving you to stare at their funny shaped lids. They started where you did.

I didn't need a drink on a 10 but we are all different if having or not having a bottle of drink on your ride worries you then take one.

It is your first one once you have popped your TT Cherry you will know how to pace and attack far better and you second time will be better than your first my first was 32 mins my second 29.34.

You should come over the line totally spent but this will take experience (or a bit of luck) do not go off too fast. It will be better that you know you complete it a smidgen faster than limping over the line howling in pain and covered in snot and drool

Actually you should be covered in snot and drool at the end of it. If you are out on the bike the next day make sure you wither have spare gear or have time to wash it.

If it is the perfect weather for a TT never ever say so weather will always be used to account for a slower than normal time. ;)

This is the race of truth it is you vs the clock each time. The only time you should worry about beating is your own - no one elses (unless you are vying for top 3 in your club but then you will be the one offering advice). Do not worry about others times if you can complete a 10 in anything under say 35 - 40 mins you are doing far, far better than most of the UK population could hope to do.

Do not slipstream anyone!

I pulled away in a low gear but in the big ring and tried to keep in the big ring all the time even up the hills however it was a fairly flat course ride in a gear suitable to your course.

Arrive early but not too early to undo the warm up (if you ride there) or early enough to give you 20-30 mins warm up allow at least 10 minutes to sign on get to the start pin your number on.

I will not say enjoy as that will be a foregone conclusion

Good luck - an envious MLC

Well done!

28min 27sec, very pleased as I was expecting it to be more like 30 to 31mins. I managed to pass one chap after about 3.5 miles, tho I probably have a good ten years on him, and was only passed twice myself, one on a full-on aero/tt bike and another young whippersnapper on some carbon thingy at about the halfway point, so I didn't feel too demoralised about that and I was still able to sedately cycle the eight miles home after a snickers and drink which probably means I didn't go hard enough!

The course S6/10 is pretty level, it's a five mile run to a roundabout with a slight ascent of just over 100 metres over the distance and pretty much level/down the ascent on the way back.

A lovely evening, not a breath of wind by the start time. I tried to follow the advice of not setting off to quick, but within the first half mile the HRM was beeping furiously at me, it then pretty continued to do so pretty much all of the way, so I guess the max rate of 180 can be raised a bit.

I did mess up a little near the end, I thought I was a corner or two further on so put some last minute effort in only to find I was 1/2 mile or so short with an up-hill gradient to go.

All in all I'm well chuffed particularly given it was my first attempt on my as-standard bike.

Chris

PS I wonder how much difference an aero helmet would make or a carbon bike, aero wheels, full on aero-tt bike, tri bars, skinsuits, light tyres, light tubes, aero-shoe covers, loosing a couple of kilos.....
