First commute today, 18 miles through rural Warwickshire/ Oxfordshire, gotta say it was kinda cool but just couldn't face riding home maybe tmw.

Ps any tips on how to avoid water bottles freezing solid

Drink the water earlier into your ride so it does get a chance to freeze.
Ps well done on the commute. 18 miles is a long way and it will take time to get the fitness up.

It was seriously cold this morning. Not all days are like that. You can buy insulated bottles or try making the drink with hot water, it will cool down rather than freezing.

36 miles per day is a fair old commute so just take your time building up to it.
No point forcing yourself and ending up not enjoying it.

Plan on driving in tmw and riding home, probably won't do both ways in a day till next week

drinks were like mush after 4 miles on the plus side there could be a market for berry electrolite slush puppies

Yeah thats a fair old commute. Especially if you are not used to that distance. Build up to it. You will get there. And with the warmer months on their way (supposedly) it should get better and easier as you get fitter and more into the cycle commute.

Yep, take it easy and build up to it. The last thing you want is to wake up or finish work on an afternoon and be dreading the ride. As the weather improves and the days become lighter you will enjoy it much more.

Fair old distance for a first commute, for any commute really. It takes some time to build up to it.

My first commute was about four miles. I've slowly moved further away.

18 miles is a cracking distance for a commute. On the days you can't face it, can you take the bike in the car part way? You can always extend the ride once you are on the bike.

18 miles each way is a fair old wack IMO! I'm planning to ride in tomorrow for the first time this year which is a 25 mile round trip. When you dont ride to work take as many spare clothes , food that doesn't go off quickly etc and bring home any stuff like dirty clothing and towels etc as it gives you a lot less to carry on your commute. ^_^

well done bud, i did my first commute today and the round trip (even taking into account a few wrong turns) was less than a single leg of yours(15 miles)
