I have two bikes with the thumb shifters (one's a 2300 and one's the older 2200). I like the fact that they are so separate when I'm using thick winter gloves, and, although I have quite large hands, I don't find they are too hard to use on the drops. They are definitely a lot easier to use than downtubes.

Claris stuff should fit the same equipment if you want to change, but don't write the shifters off before giving them a decent run, you may just like them

Great choice of bike  I have the thumb shifters on the Defy 5 and prefer them but then I am used to them . Changing from the drops isn't a hassle as you just move one hand onto the hood and change ( as you probably imagined ) Ive never found it a hassle but then again im not racing .

Yeah I can't wait for the bike to come. Xmas gift to myself.
You changed anything on it or is it standard ?

I had the little 'mouse ears' thumb shifters on my 2011 Defy 2, so the older type Sora set. I had no problems with them at all, even with my sealskinz gloves on. This summer I upgraded to Tiagra (pinched of hubby's old bike) so I rode for 2 years with the old Soras with zero issues.
