Why don't you try blasting it through with some WD40 or similar before giving up on it. They often get bunged up with dirt and start to . misbehave.

Tried that thanks (and a partial strip down) there’s damage to the cable drum that I can’t fix as the tolerances are so tight.

I did notice them but I’m on a triple on the front and I’d end up with a spare twin I wouldn’t use, however I might need to go down that route
