I have been looking for a new 8 speed cassette. I have found Acera, HG51, Altus, HG41, Sora and Deore. These are all Shimano I believe and all have the ranges I want. Can anyone tell me the difference between them and which would be the most robust. Lightness isn't an issue.

The main difference would be ratio, weight and finish. If you are not worried about the weight then get the cheapest one. You won't notice any difference..

As for chains its the same but if you decide to replace yours, don't buy shimano. Sram are much better.

^ this

If I remember MTB/Hybrid hierarchy correctly, the Deore would be top dog from those on your list, but your not going to get any discernible benefit of one over any of the others IMO.

Get the one that you can get the best deal on I suppose

Campo, I have used a few HG51 and they are pretty good.In fact, I have 3 bikes right now with HG51 cassettes.

Thanks all. The bike has a HG51 fitted from new so perhaps I will just get another one.

It's good to know I can swap between cassette models though if I see a bargain in the future.

I find SRAM cassettes are more robust, I've changed all my s***manooo bikes to SRAM. I have never had multiple chains to one shimano cassette but I have with SRAM and I prefer the ranges of SRAM too and the last time I got an 8sp cassette SRAM was cheapest.

Are SRAM directly interchangeable with Shimano (I suspect they are, but just checking)? I am looking at this:

I like the claim about "years of hassle free performance". I wonder how many years

also, will I be OK using KMC chains with these cassettes.

Yip they are perfectly interchangeable, both my 8sp bikes came with Shimano and have SRAM cassettes, so has my 10sp bike

SRAM cassettes are lighter too, by quite a margin.
