9 spd shifter & 10 spd rear mech

Anybody know what will happen if I match a 9 speed Veloce shifter with a 10 spd Xenon rear mech? Will it simply function, as 9 spd? Similarly - what will happen if I use a 10 spd Mirage cassette - assuming it will still shift OK but only across 9 of the 10 sprockets?

a) The rear mech will work but because it was designed with a different pull ratio in mind it may sound a little rough on one or two sprockets. Give it a go and see what happens.

b) The 10 spd Mirage cassette won't work because the spaces between the sprockets are smaller on a 10spd cassette.

The mech will work perfectly with the shifters, there is no difference in pull ratios between 9 and 10 speed. I'm running ten speed Veloce shifters with a nine speed mech and nine speed mirage shifters with a ten speed mech. Both are spot on.

Looks like I'll need to source a 9 spd cassette then.

I know its not the same make but i'm using a 10speed 105 rear mech with 9 speed Tiagra shifters and it works fine.

I thought similar to what Smokin Joe says but my only experience of similar is a 9sp tiagra deraileur on my 8sp sirrus, it works fine, I think you just have to adjust the limit screws.
