Hi everyone. I really enjoy this forum as it is friendly and inclusive. Many forums on the web are niche and for people spending thousands on carbon this, or titanitum that and specialist knowledge required.
I like to keep to the basics in cycling, keep it simple. When you look at manufacturers with their different ranges, loads of Shimano groupsets you wonder if it's all marketing hype. Who can say the £1500 bike is better than the £400 one? You can get satisfaction from restoring a £25 second hand bike.
For me it's a simple, green and cheap way of getting from A to B.

My query is, on my newest bike (Appollo CX10 from Halfords - I know it's not the best thing on two wheels but it does me) when I am pushing it along there is a distinct clicking noise from the rear wheel hub.
However on my other e-bay bargain old mountain bike it is silent when moving along, both have the same gear system. Does the silence indicate worn gear hub?

Ta.

No, it just indicates a cheap hub. Stick with it until something better comes up.

I am no expert but I would be more concerned by the clicking than silence. It could be something that a lube job will cure to a bearings problem. Does it only happen when you are 'pushing' the bike or when you are cycling as well?

Sorry, but when you say 'clicking', do you mean that when you're resting your legs while still moving along you get a rapid tick-tick-tick-tick-tick tick-tick-tick-tick-tick noise from the back wheel? If so, don't worry about it - that's absolutely normal, and is no indication of anything amiss (or anything to do with quality either, for that matter). Some freewheels/cassettes make more noise than others - means nada.

Cheers for your replies - Sweetpea, yes it's a rapid tick tick, same noise I remember from when I was young and the 3 speed Sturmey Archer hubs made when pushing the bike. I think it's to do with the hub and read sprocket but strange that some are silent whilst others give the rapid clicking sound.

I've had some that made it & some that didn't. Most do, to at least some extent. Either way, nowt to worry about.

Some are virtually silent, some (Campagnolo, f'rinstance) are very loud.

This echoes what simon is hearing, that even the same system may not make the same sound.
Yes, Campag is noisy compared with Shimano...and even when i compare my 2 freehubs..same make hub , same make bike (albeit a couple of years between them)..one is a lot noisier than the other. Nothing wrong with either...it's just the way it is.
