Hi,

I'm newguy1, I'm 17 and looking to invest in a hybrid bike that I will suit an urban environment, is fast, cheap and will also be capable of some light off roading (specifically canal paths). It is imperative it is easy to cycle, fast and light.

Hybrid bikes I also think often are in danger of looking like a Vicar or middle ages womans bike from the 1950s- it can't be this if I remain cool while effortlessly gliding along the road of middle class suburbia.

However, I'm on a budget, and am currently looking at around the 150-200 pound mark. I realise this will severly limit me, and has thus far meant I am scouring ebay and gumtree for a good deal.

The giant escape series has currently taken my eye, but I really have no idea what I'm looking for.

I thought you, the magnificent people of the 'commuting' thread could help me!

Any suggestions, pointers and advice will be gratefully received.

thanks,

NG1

Have you checked out Decathlon?
They make some great bikes.
Like this one for £150

You're going to struggle to get fast, light and cheap. Best bet would probably be keep an eye on ebay for something like the Specialized Sirrus or the Giant Escape you mention second hand. Oh, and keep an eye out on the classified section on here. You never know your luck.

I agree about Decathlon. If you want a new bike for your budget, it's your best bet.

But you could get a really good deal second hand, especially if you're patient and don't mind waiting for the right bike at the right price. Only downside is that you may need to spend a few extra pounds on fixing any issues the bike has.

i picked up a trek 7.2 fx on ebay 2 years ago for 180 and it served me well - recently upgraded to a roadie and sold the trek for......................180!

Worth buying decent as it holds its value

Used to have a Sirrus and was a great bike if you can pick one up second hand

Hello there NG1 and welcome. You best bet is to look on ebay but also try gumtree and preloved who also have good bargains. Try to find something that had little use as you might not know what to look for in a well used but maybe looked after example, be patient and I am sure you will find something you like. Also check the classifieds on here. Make sure you get the correct size for you. Good luck and don't forget to get a helmet.
