what worries me is that as a formerly strong swimmer myself I would have no hesitation to jump in. What I am asking myself is why did the fella die when he was a strong swimmer ?
It's one thing to be a strong swimmer in warm stationary water such as a heated swimming pool. It's another to be in rapidly moving cold water!
As described above - the cold would really shock your body.
1 cubic metre of water weighs a tonne (pretty much equal to an imperial ton). If your legs present a surface area of about 0.5 square metres to the water and it is moving at 2 metres per second (only about 4.5 mph) then you are going to be hit by a tonne of water per second. I don't care how strong you are, that's going to take some resisting...
When you think about it, a water cannon can knock a rioter off his feet. What would the equivalent of 20 or 30 of them do?
The couple should have been aware that dogs love to dive into rivers. Their dogs should have been kept on leads since the river was in spate. You wouldn't let your children swim in a raging torrent, so why allow your dogs to?
Yes, it is a tragic case. And after all of that, it looks as though the dogs died too (certainly one of them did)...
