.......go to your shed/garage/lock-up/spare bedroom/utility room etc. and lock your bike with a decent D-lock to something that doesn't move - NOW!

Nah, mine's insured for more than it's worth so it won't exactly break my heart (or the bank) if it gets robbed.

My bikes are indoors but I don't lock them up because I'd be more concerned about the fight-to-the-death that would ensue if I caught some miserable scrotes in here trying to nick 'em!

I am obsessive about security .Garage door has a gate over it .six bikes three are mine .Each have their own locks and cables .Each one it intertwined with another bike .Really faffy when i want to go out .But rather that than have them pinched .Also a gate locked into the garden .But you could climb over that .

Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Cam ahn then!!! Actually old fruit, I'd win since I can run faster than you. Having said that, you may well catch me on the hill out of Hebby and if not, you would CERTAINLY catch me on the downhill as your technique is superior to mine on the descents. Well, saying all that, I have serious doubts as to whether I'd ever be tempted to steal anything. Ever.

Shan't! I've never locked any of my bikes anywhere and I'm not going to start fretting myself to death now.

PaulB - you do realise that insurers pay out the lower of insured value and actual value? Insure it for more than it is worth and all you are doing is making them a present of the extra premium.

my bike shed cost 10x what my bike cost. If my bike gets nicked I will console myself thinking that the daft buggers nicked the bike and left the shed

Did you have a break-in? I'm very sorry if that's the case.

I think it is tundra's disgust at yet another entry into the 'Stolen' section that prompted this post. All my bikes, that do not leave the flat when I do, are chained together...
We all spend time thinking about, choosing, anticipating, paying for, caring and enjoying our bikes - and when it is stolen..? Nothing. Not really a crime in the grand scheme of things, "only a bike", don't worry - get another etc...It hurts people a lot. The person doing the hurting will never understand...whether it is a bike - or anything else. And they rest safe in the knowledge that there is no real penalty to be endured should things go 'a bit wrong' and they get caught. (We have all read about the 'sellers' on Gumtree, the bay etc...)

So I think it is a message of care and consideration.

The only time my bike is not locked in an alarmed garage or under my bum is when I finish a ride and leave it outside my buddy's house to go in for a chinwag and a drink of water. It's a very quiet area, a smart cul-de sac with only a few dog walkers passing but yes, I guess I ought to take more care because one day somebody will happen by who steals bikes.

When I was a teenager, a mate left his bike propped up under the bay window at the front of our house. My parents were watching TV and the set was located just within that window. Somebody nicked the bike! The thief must have opened the gate and sneaked up the path on hands and knees not to have been spotted.

I read about a family going on holiday in Scotland once. They'd booked in at a B&B in a remote area and situated down a long farm track. They thought their 4 bikes would be safe locked to the rack on the back of their car but when they got up the next day, all 4 bikes had gone!

I thought my bike would be safe chained up in the bike sheds at school - it got nicked!

So, you might get away with leaving yours in a smart cul-de-sac, but I wouldn't be happy doing it!

..reminds me. Must get some decent garage locks. This summer my neighbour's son lost 2 mtbs to thieves who got into the garage. They were £2k + bikes. His dad is a copper.
