I discovered the thermal ink use while in Germany last year when I attempted to dry out the tickets on the pan lid/frying pan of a Trangia. I ended up with a selection of fully blackened and partially blackened tickets.
The chap in the Eastcoast Trains office at Kings Cross station was very good. He issued replacement tickets but couldn't do the seat bookings without details of the original transaction.
