Our garden is large, but it's mostly concrete with a few raised beds. Not to put too fine a point on it, it's an infertile wasteland which is pretty horrible. We've been meaning to smash the concrete up for ages, but I was always prepared to find about three feet of hardcore beneath it which needed digging out and skipping, to be replaced by around two thousand tonnes of topsoil at some horrendous cost.
Well, today I went out with my sledgehammer and a shovel, and scraped away the gravel covering the concrete. I swung the hammer, only to see it disappear through the concrete as if it was wet cardboard. The long and short of it is that there's only an inch or so of concrete laid directly on top of what looks to be sandy soil. A tonne or two of topsoil and a bit of elbow grease should give us a lovely well drained bed, all ready for planting stuff in by the end of February. How very satisfying.
