Yes, accidents can happen!
A few weeks ago I arranged to meet some friends at a Cafe some 10 miles from home. It had rained during the night but it was dry when I left home in the morn.
I was going thro' a cycle path in a Country Park and was really moving when I hit some mud on a turn. I went down, ribs on to the handlebars and the rest on the tarmac path. Thought I was sent for! Not a sod for miles - I was looking for sympathy. Bike knackered so walked (hobbled) back about 2 miles to civilisation. Found a Doctor's Surgery who wouldn't treat me as I was not one of their patients. Took a train home feeling soooooo sorry for myself.

Result
Bike written off.
Helmet Cracked (Father's day pressie 2 weeks earlier)
Cycle gloves ruined (Father's day pressie 2 weeks earlier)
Cracked rib/s and shoulder. With cuts all over.

Lessons
Don't cycle so fast in the wet
ALWAYS wear a Helmet
And the biggie
Don't laugh, sneeze or cough with cracked ribs

Ouch, you have my sympathy. Is the bike really written off? What's the damage?

I had a nice slide this morning on a downhill bit of a lane I ride frequently.Dead leaves and mud on the wet tarmac made it nice and greasy, only my lightning reactions and amazing skill avoided a similar fate to yours :-).(Pure luck not to come off really as I flapped and braked too hard initially )

Hope your ribs heal quickly and your back on the bike soon.

I went out this afternoon on my son's bike. Gotta say it was with some trepidation and lack of speed. I am nearly 60 and (used to) feel like I was in my 20s.

There is a kind of role reversal with my son as he is now the one saying" now take it easy you'll get there just the same".

Regarding your insurance, are you claiming off the house insurance?

Wow, you did quite a number on it! Is the frame itself sound?

I think it is! The report will tell all tho'.
I am going down this morning to see if the report is ready yet.
Still not sure what to go for. It's gotta be a Hybrid around £500

Oh dear - hope you get yourself and your trusty steed sorted ;)

I know how you feel, some w****r in a BMW decided to hit me a few weeks ago. I bruised my ribs, sparined shoulder and had no skin on bum which was v painful. Bike very poorly too.

I feel for your ribs
