I spotted this at the reccent Peterborough antiques fair and instantly recognised what it was*. Although it was rather grubby and stiff, I didn't even haggle with the dealer, who wanted £10 for it. After many hours cleaning and relubrication, it now spins for up to 45 seconds with one flick of the finger - very therapeutic!

*Geek note: it's a Trentman, one of the first centrepin reels to use twin ball races. I still have one which I bought 40 years or so ago from Tom Watson's tackle shop in Oak Street, Nottingham. Now, 45 seconds may sound quite a lot, but it still doesn't match either of my Adcock Stantons, which run for about 75 seconds, and is nowhere near my other Trentman, which can manage 110 seconds, but it's likely to be fine with a fairly hefty waggler or stick float on the Trent. Hell, I may even take up fishing again - I get a reduced price licence from January 2018.

What's preventing it from spinning as freely as your other Trentman? Is it a different model or are the bearings in this one just a bit past it?

Not really sure - my other one has open bearings, i.e. without the dust cap, so it's easier to check condition, and to lubricate, but I suspect that the rather, er, agricultural drag device had been left on maximum for too long for some unaccountable reason, and is catching ever so slightly. I've persuaded it to go back towards a friction-free position, but it may need a little more help. It's still a work in progress.....

As they say, fishing tackle is not for catching fish, but for catching fishermen. That said, I can see the appeal and I don't even fish
