Shops like Mountain Warehouse sell some decent kit - I bought a mid layer for a tenner last winter.

I found my Aldi compression top, with a short sleeve jersey on top perfectly warm yesterday which has been the coldest day I've riden so far. I have an Endura Pak-a-jak to go over the top for slightly windy wetter weather.

I'll definitely be getting another compression top after how good I've found this one to be, worth keeping an eye on Aldi or Lidl's and see if they get any more of their ones back in. Lidl's are supposed to be getting some on the 13th so will be going in then to see what there's are like. For £9.99 can't complain.

After an even longer cold ride today I have even more praise for the compression top, teamed up with my ss jersey and pak-a-jak I couldn't even feel the cold which made my ride a lot more enjoyable. You won't regret getting one.

Went back to Aldi this afternoon and all they had was an empty box of a compression top in my size, got a winter shirt though, got home, tried it on and going back tomorrow to get another one,so still on the hunt for a warm base layer.

any thin wool top makes a fantastic mid layer, preferably with a zip down the front to help with temperature regulation it dose not have to be bike specific as you have a base layer on and a wind proof over the top.

My mid layer is my summer cycling jerseys

Same here; base layer, cycling shirt then shell layer.

But what's with the 'compression' shirt? Do they provide anything above and beyond a normal base layer? I thought compression stuff was for after a ride??

I've seen them in Lidls here but I reckon if I wore one, I'd look like a middle aged man who's desperately trying to hang onto his youth (erm, better get one then!) OR that I'm off to a gay bar!

I'm not sure they provide any benefit over other base layers but compression sportswear is designed to help maintain heat in your muscles reducing muscle fatigue and therefore have a performance benefit. How true this is, I don't know but it definitely keeps me warm and wicks away sweat in the process. I'm not sure what type of clothing is meant for after a ride but compression is definitely meant for during sports and is very popular in running as a single layer and also football as a base layer.

Most actually just make your ss jersey look long sleeved, nothing like what you imagine lol
