Looking at a new bike

Have been cycling on a road bike for just over a year and I'm now really enjoying it I bought a budget bike under £200 to start but now it's time for some thing a little better

Have been looking at a Scott speedster 60 compact and a giant defy 5 both are about the same prices

I ll bet if you looked at the specs they'd be almost identical. There are very few poor value bikes at this price point, really comes down to which colour you prefer.

Agreed. You've picked two good brands, it may come down to what gearing they come with and the colour. If you can, get a test ride on each of them and see which one feels best to you.
