Advice sought on bike to buy

Hi

I commute on my hybrid every day 16 miles but I want to turn it back into a full time mountain bike.

I want a road bike for my commute. I am very out of touch with all of the new fangled stuff in this world. Carbon fibre what is that?

Seriously I thought that maybe an audax bike would do the trick.

I would rather buy second hand due to limited funds but could go new if the advice is to do that due to the amount of use that these bikes get.



So the questions are:

1. can anyone recommend a good bike to buy
2. can you really light tour on them - do they fit panniers
3. What is good for a commuter?
4. What am I looking at to spend (be sensible here)

Any answers you receive on bikes is always subjective - why don't you go to a couple of local bike shops ( preferably that stock different brands) and ask them. The ride them and find which suits you best.
There are umpteen bikes that fit the bill at a price from anywhere bewteen £300 and sky's the limit.
