Afan - worth a trip in the autumn?

got some holiday to use up so thinking of begging to borrow the car and taking a long weekend down there.

Also does anyone know any mtb friendly b+B's in the vicinity?

I stayed at Afan Lodge Hotel on a club weekend a couple of years back. The place is clean and very welcoming for mountainbikers.

You could ride for the whole week at Afan if you wanted to, there are 2 centres Afan and Glyncorrwg. They are linked together by a cycleway this is pretty handy ( afan MTB trails-google maps sorry I can't link it for some reason) shows how the trails link up. There is camping at both centres Glyncorrwg has more facilities for instance can get an early breakfast at the centre, tho fees are more expensive £5 per night FFS extorcinate ! It would nearly cost you that to park for the day. I known you like your riding to be on the wilderness side, so the skyline route would be probably your No.1 choice the other routes are more the usual trail centre stuff. Is it worth it, well I could think of better places in Wales to ride but for a flyer and to have everything there and close you could do a lot worse. Sorry can t help with the B&B.

Remarkably for me, and your spot on about my preferences, I fancy going to try the more trail centre stuff. The full-boinger I bought last year has not yet been used properly in anger and I fancied falling off a lot and hurting myself taking it somewhere for a good play to learn how to ride it.

Given Cwmbelan, where my late f-i-l's old home is, is more of less in the geographic centre of Wales where else would you recommend? (I know Nant-yr-Arian and the Mach trails.

Ah if its trail centre you are after, Afan is hard to beat. I think the Penhydd trail is closed at the moment but there is plenty of other stuff available with a fairly new skills route thats fun. But I think this might top it http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/stop-press.138266/ havn't been there yet but hope to in the next couple of weeks or so. For the wilderness stuff Llanwrtyd wells is my preffered location there is so much around there I wouldn t know where to start.
