Age at Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis and life expectancy

I've just been diagnosed as having non diabetic hyperglycemia basically pre diabetese, I'm looking forward to having the chat about losing weight, regular exercise and a healthy diet considering that I had my fourth heart attack in twent years at the end of August, I'm not overweight and I have obviously tried to eat a healthy diet since my first two heart attacks in 2003 plus I'm still doing 100 miles a week on the turbo (My wife won't let me play out ) though at a reduced output until the specialist decides what his plan of action is going to be.

My Dad had type 2 diabetes diagnosed in his 30's, he wasn't that over weight either, he didn't stick to any strict diabetes diet and he lived until he was 79. He eventually needed daily injections to control his sugar levels.

With a healthier lifestyle he probably could have lived much longer and with better health.

Seems a bit sparse on info. Age, weight, severity etc ?

The diet only cure thus looks difficult though probably much better than pills.

I reversed my type 2 by losing over 20kg, not by a daily restrictive diet though but by putting less food on my plate (portion control) and intermittent fasting (5:2 diet) although now I've lost weight I only 'fast' for one day a week.
I also generally only eat food I've cooked myself (no 'ready meals' or takeaways) and have reduced the amount of Carbohydrates I eat (spuds and bread being the worse offenders) very seldom eat crisps but I am still partial to Biccies.

Mrs D's was brought about by the treatment shes had for MS, particularly in the early days when she was being rammed with all sorts of drugs to try and save her sight.

A bit of a rum deal, but better than being prematurely brown bread.

It leaves a lot of questions. Does adding exercise improve the cure rate and also, how much does age taper off the cure rate?

I heard a 'does not work for over 55s' around about when the famous Newcastle 'Counterpoint study' was released in about 2012. But even there, it is likely to still be a tapering thing.

Seems they alsomdid a proof of the pudding 'Counterbalance' study, realised in 2016.

Might be useful for some. Sadly, no specific age data was given.

I was in my late 50's when I got my blood sugar under control so for me that doesn't hold true, also exercise is very difficult for me as I have a non-union fracture in my left collarbone and a bloody great rod and screws holding my leg together after snapping my Femur into 3 pieces. I'm also riddled with arthritis (both knees, both hips and my neck) but do what I can to keep mobile.

The 'over 55' thing was put out, I think, by a Diabetes UK' spokeperson when they met that 2011 publication with 'extreme caution'.

Yep because if it got out that type 2 was reversible and medication was not the answer they'd all be out of a job. Having said that many people would not make the required lifestyle changes preferring to keep eating Pizza, Burgers Fried Chicken and Doner Kebabs* and snacking on Crisps, Choccy bars and 'Sweeties' whilst drinking copious amounts of Fizzy Pop.

* one of the things I've noticed is shops offering 'Doner Meat and Chips on a tray' missing all the benefits of the Salad although in some Kebab shops the Salad is woeful. It became my guide to how good the shop is just by looking at the Salad, if the Lettuce, Onion and Cabbage looked fresh seemed a good indicator of general hygiene and pride the owners took with their food prep.

Fortunately type 2 can be fully reversed if you catch it early enough before permanent organ damage is done.

Change your diet,
Low Carb High Fat LCHF
Drop as much weight possible to get you back into ideal zone. Increase protein, employ intermittent fasting 18/6. Cut alcohol intake to a few drinks a week.

Exercise regularly, strength and cardio
