Found a 1974 copy of the CTC magazine, Cycletouring, in a recycling box today. Full page advert on the back from Halfords (back in the day when they were probably still a good bet), with some prices:

Saddles, from £1.38
Battery front lamps, with batteries, from 65.5p
Mudguards, per pair, from £1.10

There's a review of the Peugeot AE8, (10 speed, £48.95), and a whole page filled with sketches some chap did from his holiday slides.

There's also an ad for the Dawes Galaxy, so not everything changes.

The average wage was probably about £35 pw but I don't know how that relates.
The Peugeot would translate to £500?

No, it says it 'available in Blaze or Leaf Green'.

Mine was metallic lilac with white bar tape when I got it, we think it was late 80's/early 90's vintage.
