GtiJ and I cycled from Buckden up the Cote de Cray in the Yorkshire Dales yesterday, an enjoyable climb on fresh legs, unlike Fleet Moss which came later on tired legs and near killed us.

The air in Wharfedale was hazy with humidity but the air on the col above Cray was clear and fresh, a stunning spring morning. However as we rode north-east into Bishopdale I could see mist curling up in the valley and sliding over the col, backlit by the sun. I was quite surprised to see such obvious mist considering that the atmosphere was generally dry and warm. When we began the descent into the valley a smell of sulphur dioxide hit us and I realised that the mist was actually photochemical smog, coming from East Yorkshire or more likely all the way from Europe on the easterly breeze.

It's shocking to realise that even in the middle of a beautiful area like the Dales you are not far from industrial and traffic pollution, even on a Sunday. You don't even notice it until your nose gets a few minutes of clean air before diving back into the smog.
