If I get my act together and finish my MSc dissertation by Friday I'll put it into the Printers and submit on Monday or Tuesday; I can't really do anything over the weekend or can I ? At the moment I thinking of doing some local loops or something which I can repeat to get 100miles in. Am I crazy to even think about it as my last 90 miler was in September, my last century was in August (150 miles to Berwick upon Tweed and back) and this year my longest ride has been 53 miles (43 of which was in a pack) and my longest non stop solo ride has been 40 miles ?

Congratulations on nearly having completed your dissertation

Seeing how you are generally fit and only just starting to reach your best years , I don't see why you shouldn't be able to do it ... but it may hurt a bit towards the end ...:tired:

If you were to do a series of loops from home or a figure of 8 with the smaller loop as the second part, you could bail out if it you run out of steam or if this wind keeps up. On the other hand, this "safe option" may put temptation in your way to bail early.

Just take it easy (by your standards) and see how it goes

P.S. I'm in the same boat - have done 55k this year, and think I should be able to do 100k if I take it easy, and if it's not too hilly & windy

Work out a route that roughly follows a local trainline, select a station approx 50 miles from home and go for it, that way you can have multiple bailout options.

Thanks for the encouragement folks. If I don't get time to plan it, it'll just be some local routes (there is that temptation like T says to pull out) or if I plan it I quite fancy taking a road I've never been down before, one by Dunblane; Eludino has kindly gave me some advice as to its condition. :-)

You can do it. I just did my first 100k a couple of weeks ago so 100 miles should be no bother to you

PS a great incentive for finishing on Friday and a great way to de-stress.

Get on with it.

I'm more than twice your age and not too healthy and did 88miles weekend before last so of course you can do it!

I'm twenty years older, far from fit, and I've never been more than 67 miles, but I think that even I could do a hundred if I wanted to. A lot of it is in one's mind, I suspect. Personally, I would choose a route that has no repetition (eg laps) because I find that a bit soul destroying. Having a clear destination gives you a real goal.

Just do it. You know you can

Whenever someone starts a thread "Am I crazy...?" the answer generally is "Yes, but there are many equally crazy people here to egg you on..." Let us all know how long the century takes.

Good luck.

Cheers folk; the dissertation went off to the printer this morning so that's me got time on my hands until its ready. I've plotted a nice route to Dunblane circling by Falkland. Its got a bail out if need be but it involves Dunning to the Path of Condie (21.5%); it might be easier to go round that, the road is only 19.8% then but I'll have the wind behind me  I can also shave of a bit at the end if I'm completely knackered.

After all the wind we've had in the past week, this weekend looks like a decent one for heading out, so hope you have a good 'un. I'll not be going very far as I've got a date with some Ikea furniture instead - and it'll probably take us ALL weekend to assemble it!

Go for it.. !!
I did my first 100 miler a few years back, with absolutely no training or idea WTF I was leting myself in for - up until that point I was a weekend family POB.. Longest ride i'd done was 5 miles to the park & back!!
It was a turning point in my life!!

And congrats on the dissertation... I'd rather ride 200 miles in flip flops, than go through that again ;)

PS I voted.. Yes, you are crazy...But then, who the heck would want to be normal & boring!
