You must have a very large bike then. I push my bike along that pavement every day in order to catch a train, and I don't feel the need to ride it.

However big or small your bike is, walking beside it is going to require more pavement space than standing astride it. Or am I missing something fundamental?

Am sure it was not you the snail I've got no problems with people getting used to their spd's but starting off with lower gears would be something which you should have down pat now.

I'd be in trouble with you - I'm not that bothered if I start in too high a gear. It doesn't seem to make such a massive difference anyway, my start is slightly slower, but not so much that anyone would notice.

Perhaps they're going to catch trains? I sometimes have to cross a very busy pavement to gain access to the cycle parking in the pedestrianised area on the other side of it. My choices are to cycle at walking pace or to wheel the bike, and having tried both I found that cycling (or scooting while astride the bike, but that's a bit complicated on a fixie) generally inconveniences fewer people simply because I take up less space than I would if walking beside the bike.

I find that if I push my bike along the pavement - loads of people walk straight into it!

In the winter I can help this by making sure that the lights are on! This does help but occasionally I get shouted (and sworn at) to turn the lights off!

I agree that the bike + me = more space than people want to concede!!!

Back on topic - what annoys me is cyclists who overtake me with no room for error! I get just as annoyed with a close overtake from a cyclist as I do a car!

Yes, or try to walk between it and me (presumably having already chosen their route through the crowd before they saw it or saw that I was holding on to it)
