Most famous ex-pro bicycle brands are created in the name of the famous ex-pro. They may have varying degrees of involvement/ ownership and perhaps even design input but in truth few pro cyclists step seamlessly from riding bicycles into the manufacture of bicycles.

Interestingly, neither Tulio Campagnolo (who was a pro racer) nor Shozaburo Shimano (who was not) sold complete bicycles. The latter made it a principle not to compete with his customers.
