I was all chuffed with myself for picking up a used but good condition Planet X A57 SP Pro Racing Bike Wheel with takes a "8, 9, 10 speed shimano / sram cassette"

Unfortunately the freehub is the special 10 speed design with higher splines.

Either I find a replacement freehub or it is useless to me.

I've tried to find a replacement but I am a little lost.

Aren't the higher splines to match ultegra and durace cassette's?
I know my Novatech wheels were like that (also 10 speed)

Correct. Unfortunately I am using a 9 speed setup and cant get a 9 speed higher spline cassette.

If a standard shimano one will fit I have one in the shed thats no use to me as the axle for the wheel is missing and the spokes are rusty. Got most tools if you tell me how to get it off.

Google "removing freehub" Need large allen key.
And a LOT of force.

Not in my experience. A lot of force for a freewheel, sure, but a freehub shouldn't tighten in use (although I think Michelle use a rubbish design that does), so just a moderate amount of grunt.
OK. I tried to get a Shimano freehub off and it was not for moving. 10mm allen IIRC . The freewheel on the Peugeot came off relatively easy (with a cheater bar).
