I’ve created an account on Chess.com and play a couple of ‘rapid’ games a day (each player has 10 mins), and have to say, even though I’m hopeless, it’s great fun. More than a bit addictive.

The website is very good, easy to use, thousands (millions?) of users, you’ll find someone of your standard to play anytime of day or night, or you can play a bot.

Highly recommended!

I play lots and lots of daily. My blitz/bullet game is shockingly bad so I don't bother. I have played a couple of 10 min games by accident when I pressed the wrong play now button.

My father taught me chess as a kid but stopped playing me a couple of years later when he could no longer beat me.

Played a bit in the school league and won a competition at the local community centre.

Didn’t play then for a while until we started playing half hour games during lunch break in work. That went on till I played a bloke who had been a junior Scottish champion. I beat him and he really didn’t like it. His reaction to being beaten put a stop to the whole thing.

Played sporadically since but it’s difficult to find the time.

I did consider posting there.

Is chess a sport? Discuss .

Here's what Google says:

A sport is a physical activity that involves competition and rules, while a game is an activity that can be physical or mental, and may or may not involve competition. All sports are games, but not all games are sports.

So chess is a game, not a sport. Same as snooker. Not sure if I agree that all sports are games though? Cycling? I've never gone for a game of cycling!

I often play a bot on chess.com.

I played a few games with the lads at work a year ago but I get so effing serious about it I had to stop. It’s not that I’m a bad loser, or a bad winner (at least on the outside). It’s just that I get so emotionally involved.. Maybe playing bullet chess for a while would help bring back the fun element.

To paraphrase Hemingway, things like mountaineering or caving are sports; kicking a ball round a field is merely a game

I play on Chess.com with 3 folks I know in real life. I'm pretty hopeless tho'. We have games where a move doesn't have to be made for 2 or 3 days before timed out. Gives my tiny brain a chance. I also have a go at the Puzzles and have played the odd Bot with the setting on incredibly simple.

As a young lad (junior school) I represented my town at the Liverpool chess Congress and won a prize of some sort.
As I got older I started playing lads who spent forever planning moves. That bored me so much I gave up playing.
I still have my chess set from the 50s.
