I'm with everyone else here, a definite no to Bose.
Their selling point was the non-intrusive (tiny) satellite speakers, with a do-everything-else sub trying to produce most of the midrange as a well as the bass. To me and many others that's a compromise that ruins the sound.
As recommended by others, I'd have a decent dealer set up a demonstration and take some of your favourite stuff for a listen. Sevenoaks Hifi was my choice. What Hifi always recommends a minidisc recording of the voice of someone you know - which is a good indicator of the accuracy of the setup. Just choose a budget, what you're going to use it for and enjoy yourself, there's lots to choose from.
I'm more obsessed than most: B&W 602s3 (lurve that kevlar), LCR60 centre, DM303 rear, Atacama Stands, Denon AVR1802 Amp, Rotel RCD-1072 CD, Ecosse Reference CS2.3 cable biwired with CS2.15 for front trebles. Can hear Diana Krall breathe and you have to duck Maximus' catapults.
