Someone ripped out the chimney with the backboiler in it here , before I moved in . I would have loved that given that im a carpenter so free fuel and hot water ! I wonder what the costs are to replace ? The chimney is there , just the fireplace and boiler are gone .
i have seen back boilers that are as simple as a painted steel box! i would weld one up for the cost of the steel and know various mates that would do it in exchange for a hand with something they need help with

when i move away from home there will be one big investment i will be making.....a rayburn

only a small one as i will be living by my self but one that can cook, provide hot water and supply 2 or 3 radiators (i don't want a big house!) and it 3 will all be fired by wood

oh look! they made one just for me

If a rayburn could really cook, there would be a lot less weddings going on!
oh trust me they can! i know many a farmer with a decent rayburn to cook and at least part of the heating

i know a couple who are getting on a bit (he is in his 80's and as close to blind as you can get without being blind! and she is her late 70's i think) and they have never had anything but a rayburn, latest one is some special electric one with a control computer as they can't lug about solid fuel any more and all, but they can't work it out so it's just left on all the time regardless of weather or not they are there or awake or asleep!

Combi potterton performa 28 The pressure is fine . Ive just looked at the manual and the flashy light is saying a fault on the temperature sensor .
Shouting at it and trying to trick it into giving me hot water is not working
Now have pans heating on the stove so I can have a wash . Reminds me of the old days with mum when we ran out of hot water and where waiting for it to heat up again

Blimey - it really is Xmas!

:giggle:

Great idea Ed, but make sure you don't go away anywhere for longer than half a day or the place will be stone cold when you return and you'll have all the hassle of laying a fire before you can be warm again. DAHIKT
Friendly neighbour would fix that

as i will live on the farm and won't really have any reason to leave. we turn the heating off when we are out for half a day here in any case so won't really be very different

apart from in Sweden everyone has better insulation and triple glazed windows

we are pretty close in this house with half a foot of fiber glass insulation with triple glazed fixed windows and double glazed opening windows

You ought to look into wood pellet burning stoves. I don't know if there are ones that cook, but for space and water heating they are getting to be quite sophisticated. Some have automatic ignition and pellet feeder and can even be controlled remotely by PC or phone. There are a lot of advances being made.

a solid cast iron wood burning stove such as a rayburn is partially for simplicity and lack of shoot to break put simply! also as the farm i will be taking over also has a fair few hectares of forest i will need to manage so part of it will be thinned for firing the rayburn which can take whole axe split wood rather then either buying wood pellets or a wood pellet making machine

but from what i hear about them they are good and efficient for the eating such as a larger eco home (not a small 1 bedroom cottage surrounded by forest) or a warehouse or large workshop etc

basically my opinion on them is good for the right application but for me not so suitable and rather costly with one a wood pellet burning boiler setting me back £1500 plus either the ongoing cost of pellets or an extra £1,500-£2000 for a pellet machine worth having
