Once upon a time, I needed to order some brochures with a tear-off back page. When discussing this with a printer, I referred to the perforated page and was corrected by him. What I wanted was not perforation, oh no no no: perforation is the series of little holes like round the periphery of a postage stamp. What I wanted and indeed what I got was the usual series of little slits, as opposed to holes.

My problem is that I cannot for the life of me remember what the proper term is for this. Can any kind soul enlighten me please?

Hmmm ... I'm fairly certain that it's one word I'm looking for and that word ends in "et" or "ette", such that the equivalent of perforating is (whatever)etting.
