Mrs Black Sheep and I might be moving to Canterbury later this year although we've never been and for want of something to do tomorrow were thinking we'd drive down and spend the day there, have a look round estate agents to get an idea of what our money would get us etc

but the main problem one has when visiting a city they don't know is finding parking that is not ridiculously expensive and is more than just a couple of hours

so any recommendations of car parks with a flat rate or something like that (one in the city we're in at the moment is 50p per hour) would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest biking, but its a bit too far

Generally speaking the parking in the City is a nightmare! Very expensive (the cheapest is around £6 for a 5hr stay), and not many spaces.

However, there are three park and ride schemes - New Dover Road, Wincheap and Sturrey - these are quite reasonable at £2 per day and free bus transfer into/out of the City.

If you come down at a weekend and don't mind a bit of a bimble then you can park for free at Canterbury College in New Dover Road.

The main city centre is not particularly car-friendly, being bisected by the pedestrianised High Street.

That said, it's a beautiful City

The park and ride sounds good, I'll be coming in from the A2 and will just hope it's signposted  (or will googleage it first)

I'm used to a car unfriendly city from living in coventry which, once you're within the ring road is very private vehicle unfriendly.

would be a monday we'd be coming down so park and ride sounds like the way to go.

thanks for the help, just what I needed to know,

any suggestions for lunch

The easiest P&R is the New Dover Road one (I think it's also the cheapest one) but it is slightly further out of town.

Loads of places to eat, especially towards the bottom end of the High Street (just over the river) and in some of the small back-streets

Canterbury's lovely, as I'm sure you know. The Park-and-Ride scheme is great, We use it when Christmas shopping which is reasonably stress free in this beautiful city. You also have Downland Cycles who organise all manner of events. I will eventually be moving to Ashford and can't wait to sample some of the wonderful opportunities to explore and imbibe. Good luck with the move.

I've never been to Kent before

will I get lynched for my northern accent and flat cap?

we'll be moving sometime between march and september assuming she gets a place on a course at Canterbury Christchurch uni.

I'll be looking for graphic design work or work in a model shop or just anything that pays the bills.

I do like shepherd neame beer tho, particularly spitfire.

we'd be looking to rent within cycling distance of the university - how cycle friendly is the city?

Lol, you won't get lynched. It's a University city, there are bikes everywhere, so that must tell you something. That part of Kent is simply stunning with so much to do on your doorstep. Faversham, the home of Shepherd Neame is a few miles away but there is an active Real Ale following in the county, much to my delight. Canterbury has al the shopping facilities you would expect with thriving craft shops and independents. Being the kind of city that it is I wouldn't expect property prices to be cheap but again, I expect you know and accept that.
