Not going to be there for the first time in several years - would have been but NT's poorly leg has confined him to Manchester, and I'd rather be with him. Also, I don't have much spare money, so shopping is out. I'm missing out on meeting up with a few YACF friends, but we'll meet online instead.

The weather is certainly a bit dire. York Rally does seem to have worse than average luck in that respect.

Ah, I think I remember that. although I can't remember who George Brown is...

George was a very keen cyclist from Preston who owned a Thorn expedition tourer and started the Pan American Highway ride. He frequented the C+ forums and used the pen name Jibi and looks like this:

Exhibiting there as usual with Velo Vision and Electric Bike magazines.

Not been over yet this morning but yesterday evening it was very wet and windy indeed. They had a telehandler pulling caravans and mobile homes out of the mud and it was taking a while for people in cars etc. to get on site because of the bottleneck crossing the racecourse. Hats off to the (volunteer) marshalls who were managing it all in some horrendous conditions.

But the forecast is for some improvement over the weekend, especially today - should be sunshine and showers as usual. Ground was squelching underfoot last night, but if it's eased a bit overnight it might be OK - there was a new drainage system put in under the site a few years ago.

Might be an idea for anyone coming by car to find some parking in town and walk, rather than drive onto the site.

I met Jibi in the Avon Gorge as I was pedalling towards the Severn Road Bridge on my LEJOG ride. He's just bought his Thorn bike and Bob Yak trailer and was pedalling them home to Preston from SJS cycles in Bridgewater. We stayed together as far as Monmouth and George forged onwards the following morning but not until he gave me his home address and an offer of a bed for the night and a day's break from cycling when I reached Preston.

it was a most fortuitous meeting.....

As I reached Chorley several days later, the rear drop out on my Dawes Galaxy fractured. A quick call to George to inform him of my disaster initiated a course of action that I could never of anticipated. My drop out fractured around 19:30 on a Friday night. George drove over to pick me up and take me to the home of Bill Nickson, the last British winner of the Milk Race where Bill brazed up the rear drop out and refused any payment as he wasn't prepared to guarantee that the repair would get me to JOG. The bike was back in roadworthy condition by 21:30!

I love that last bit.... a guy who was determined to do you a favour, you determined to be grateful for it, and him able to come up with just the right excuse to let you both keep it as a simple favour. I'll have to remember that one.

I've only been once - 3/4 years ago and ended up being a very expensive day for the wrong reasons.. Took the family in the car and parked up.The weather was very blustery, similar to the weather at the moment, and got back to the car to find a branch from a tree laying on top of it. Ended up costing north of £200 to have (most of) the paintwork scratches removed.
Shame it clashes with the WFK ride from Hornsea as I would have liked to have attended both.

PLEASE let the wind die down before tomorrow!
