I have rails on my car roof but want to put a rack up there suitable for transporting my bikes. There's so many options and opinions on this, it's driving me mad. People say 'don't get the square-profile, the noise will drive you mad' while others say 'go for square profile. They are cheaper and sturdier'.

Help, what have you done or know of that will make a roof-bike rack purchase the best option?

I just use some square profile Mont Blanc 404U ones on my Focus estate. Halfords do some exactly the same so I guess they must make them for them too. I honestly have never heard any wind noise from them ever. I use Halfords Advanced roof carriers, these are made by Thule and are very good (Thule 532 FreeRide to be exact). They only seem to sell them in packs of 2 now, I bought 2 but it was 2 years ago and cannot remember if this was the only option. They are worth paying more for, £79.99 for 2 is not bad either (may cost more from Thule cannot remember). The Mont Blanc bars were around £40 and extra for the locks if you require them, you can pay more for Thule ones if you like but these work very well.

Edit: You can get 2 Thule 532 for the same price, but if Halfords is near by may as well buy them from there. And you can also buy singles if needed.
