Interesting. Hate them even if they say thank you and that you never tailgate yourself?

the only time i tailgate is when im in a group ride, but when your with a group you each do your share of the work, when you commuting and somebody tailgates you they dont offer to sit infront of you for abit to help you out. well i have never had a tailgater ask me that before maybe some of you guys have??

I've never tailgated. When I come up to another cyclist I move over and overtake them as quickly as I can.

We're not talking about cyclists who come up behind another cyclist then overtake, we're talking about cyclists who come behind another cyclist, suck their rear wheel and stay there like, forever.

I also dislike strangers sitting on my wheel, as I don't know their skill level. I was sitting off, and some of the time a fair distance behind, which is why I added psychologically.

I like tailgaters....Peronally I'm always happy that someone feels that I am riding fast (or well) enough for them to mimic.

never bothers me at all.

if it was me in front (which I am sad to say it wasnt) then I would have been chuffed to have got your message this morning.

well done you

BIG UP THE TAILGATERS!!!

*nods* fair points about skill levels and sharing. Does being drafted by someone sap your energy though? Or is it just the theft aspect of giving a helping hand without being asked?

I ask as I hitched a lift last night for a short distance. Normally I'd have just over taken but the rider was only going marginally slower than me so I dropped in behind. I did smile and shout "thanks for the lift" as he moved out to the right to make a turn.

thats all very well but what happens if me ( the person infront ) comes off or has to slam the brakes on because of someone pulling out infront of me.

if i was to fall off then i would have you ( the tailgater ) riding over me then coming off yourself

and if i were to have to slam the brakes on and you end up going into me then i will have you riding into the back off me and coursing an accident

I don't disagree and if having someone tailgate you is likely to make you uncomfortable (and possibly induce an accident) then let them know and they will either pass, of feck off...don't let a drafter intimidate you.

there was a really nasty thread about a Putney drafter who was assaulted after only just popping in behind a rider for a short moment. Perhaps that rider had shared a similar fate (as you describe above) once before.

So, if you don't mind drafters then be happy that someone wants to draft you, if you don't like it then let them know...I know I would

perhaps we should invent a bumper sticker (If you can read this, then you are pissing me off! go draft someone else!)

Ive got to say it doesn't really bother me, but I can understand why it does for others. I personally would not tailgate others unless they were genuinely matching me for speed but I would always pull alongside or something.

I guess that's the point I was trying to make...you just made it better than me tho.:becool:

I guess my attitude to drafting has changed over time. When I first came across it I thought it was dangerous. However, now I appreciate why folk are doing it and the folk with the skill to recognise the technique tend to have the skills to do it safely and don't mind it anymore.

1. i know it courses accidents because may dad has been taken out by a rider being to close behind him and taking him out!!

2. i think your making this about stupid dont u, at no point have i said that i would get off my bike and assaulting another rider. i just dont trust other riders on the road unless i have been riding with them for a while.

tbh if you want to draft someone and then end up going in to the back of him then YOU can explain to him that he said have "let you know" that he didnt want somebody drafting him
