I don't know what to do good people of CC, had a tutor session today and its not good. We now have to decide on what we want to do in the future, but little Kovu doesn't have a clue (but my mother pointed out at 37 she still doesn't know what to do), and she now has to decide within the next month or so if she wants to go to uni or not. (Just realised that i'm talking in third person and that's crazy!) But I basically don't know what to do at all, I have always said I'll go into business but that's just because its what my parents want me to do, I dont think I really want to be in an office somewhere.

Meh! I'll just go and sit in a dark room and watch phone booth and drown my sorrows ..... ;)

Wrong economic climate to 'go into business'. I'd go to uni until the credit crunch is over.

I still don't know what I want to do, but I'd hugely recommend going to uni and studying something you LOVE. But not 'media studies' because OH MY WORD that's a useless degree.

Try not to worry though...it'll all come right in the end.

Well what do you like doing, what interests you and can you make a job out of it?

College wise, my only good lesson is politics, but i think that's because the class is funny, not the lesson itself, although I am interested in it. I do debating, but that's not fun, it's just easyyyy.
Out of college, I love film, I'm very good about films and knows alot about most that i have. Do love my films.

It's a good idea Cathryn, but I have always said that if I go to uni, I want to go to uni with an idea of what i want to do. Otherwise I dont want all those debts, but also if i dont have the motivation then I know I'll drop out.

Most of us fall into certain jobs because either we don't have a clue, we know people who have done it before, we have an idea it may be something we are interested in or quite simply we need the money. There is little encouragement to think creatively and widely to find something that we would feel was worthwhile getting up for in the morning. Do you have any useful careers advisers in school? Have you looked at any of the books/websites that try from their questioning to identify something that fits your skills? Don't necessarily expect to get it right first time which is exactly why unless you know what you want that you should study the subjects that you enjoy and motivate you to work hard - hopefully there are some. I sort of fell into my career and whilst I enjoyed it (some of the time) my after children job which uses all those skills is far more rewarding although not in a monetary sense. Just because you start down one road doesn't mean you can't change direction.

I don't mean it like that, I went to a college too . Right in that case they seem to be rushing you. Uni applications aren't till autumn of the second year. Yes you should be thinking about it, but only as a process of thinking and visiting places over the next 9 months.

I liek that last bit. I think I forget that because of how our college is.

We were told that they have to be in by Oct, but because of silly college they want it all done earlish.

You could always take a gap year and give it some further thought, provided you don't mind doing some basic work during that time. Do avoid the media thing though (I speak as a former media lecturer).

That doesn't sound that bad i guess. I'm jsut against going to uni just for the sake of going to uni.

Wierdly enough media was the only subject i enjoyed in high school.

Or do the other way, apply, think about it, if you change your mind withdraw your offer or ask to defer? All you lose is £20 or whatever those useless UCAS people charge thesedays. I still think they are rushing you!

FWIW Your mum is spot on.
25 years after leaving education with no clue as to what to 'make' of my life I have finally found an occupation I feel suits me best.
