ASL Crackdown

Hopefully the start of a lot more. The idea of driving correctly doesn't end the moment people pass a test. It's about time something was done to remind everyone of that.

It needs to be decriminalised first and then there needs to be some definition of what constitutes a fine, I suspect similar to what we already have i.e. not fineable if you stop in the area whilst the line is green.

It would be a small rollout to a few a junctions first of all and I certainly doubt it would ever be on all.

Weirdly this is the thing that annoys me least, apart from when they roll in alongside me or creep in behind me

Might be an idea to try getting half the cabs & motorbikes to stay behind the line at the front of the ASL and then tackle the ones that creep past the line at the back... If I want to stop ahead of the traffic, half the time I have to sit just short of the ped crossing area.

Personally I don't agree with fining motorists for this. Believe that cars should avoid them as a general rule, but sometimes when driving you can be caught out by traffic/emergency vehicles/lights etc and end up in one. Have no problem with motorcyclists using them- they're quick off the mark and don't get in a cyclists way. Seen the occasional cyclist speaking to a motorbike (when I'm cycling too) when the motorbike isn't causing any bother and neither is causing the other any hindrance. Just makes me roll my eyes. However, I do believe a motorbike should give a cyclist priority if they're in front. Providing no left hooks or dodgy moves are dished out I don't see the issue. ASLs (for all concerned) are about common sense.

It is my understanding that, unlike a yellow box, you are not committing an offence by being in it. Merely moving over the stop line into it when the lights are already red. Do you have a problem with that?

If you do so to facilitate a blue light overtake then that is mitigation which one would have thought would be accepted. And anyway you shouldn't hesitate to think about traffic regs if they inhibit an emergency situation anyway.

It doesn't come very high on my list of things to be outraged about.
Like all things it depends on context. If a car is doing it to intimidate riders already in the box or prevent other riders from entering it or go too far forward to get around the vehicle then either a fine or a tap on the roof with your pump may be helpful ;)
