Some might remember this case from over a year ago. Mr Baker is brain damaged as a result and needs constant care. I really feel for him and his family.

It says something for where and when we cycle. The poor bugger had cycled into what was effectively a trap with little chance of escape. Two of the other routes in the local area head past either the docks or through a new housing estate.

It also says much for how we prevent crime. Police have suffered continuous cutbacks, and youth schemes appear to be nonexistant. So when people do end up in criminal circles there is no one around to stop them, and catching them takes a very long time.

Shocking. I don't think it is anything to do with cycling, or policing though. Mindless thugs with no respect for human life, so long as there are people like that around anyone could be a target - if they're vulnerable and unable to defend themselves, and the police can't be everywhere. The sentences are too short, and they should be doing hard labour to pay towards Mr. Baker's care for the rest of his life. I hope the cps can appeal the sentences.

lengthy prison sentences. = 4 Years each? ... maybe 140 years each I might say "yeah a little bit long (with a smile)) ... but 4 years and that's classed as lengthy? ... the law is a complete joke, you'll receive 10 years for robbing a few grand from your employer ... life is so cheap in this country

I think there are definate problems with policing. My neighbour had his tyres slashed on his car 2 days back, the guy even told him he was going to do it, yet the police wouldnt even take a statement it seems. Someone on here once refered to the Police as "a fire service" iirc.

Yes, its true that if people behaved then there would be no issues to worry about.

At the time of the first report I think it got on here because "cyclist" was mentioned,

I am sorry but 4 years (out in 2?) is a joke. I am sure they would have got longer than that if they had robbed a bank FFS. GBH??? This attempted manslaughter at the very least surly? The assault I suffered (Cut nose, bruising to face and body and broken shin was classed as GBH with intent. The law in this country is insane. I am strongly moving towards a belief that the punishment should fit the crime.

Were is Harry Brown when we need him?

I wonder if it is something to do with the fact that the police are having there manpower cut, duties increased and ability to police as a force rather than a service obliterated?

So does "received a four-year indeterminate sentence" mean 4 years maximum or 4year minimum ?

The sentencing is done by the cps and not the police. Lets not ignore that point.

I know my comment re the police was in relation to

I may be wrong but I thought the cps only decide wether to prosecute or not, I believe sentencing is down to the judge?

Either way that sentence is a farce.

As I understand it: The CPS decide whether or not to prosecute. The opposing briefs discuss the case. If they come to an agreement regarding sentencing this is offered to the judge and (usually) it is accepted. If there is no agreement on a suitable sentence then it goes to trail.
